Rosie Steeves, PhD
Principal and Co-founder, The Refinery Leadership Partners Inc.

With over 30 years of experience in the leadership development field, Dr. Rosie Steeves has spearheaded initiatives in countless organizations, from small companies experiencing start-up challenges to Fortune 500 corporations pursuing aggressive growth strategies. Today Rosie works mainly with the CEOs and senior executive teams of large corporations. She also leads The Refinery’s Trends and Inquiry department, which conducts ongoing research into current leadership and organizational development issues. A certified executive and leadership coach, Rosie has a PhD in Human and Organizational Development from the Fielding Institute in Santa Barbara, California. She also holds a BA and MA in engineering from Cambridge University, England, where she graduated with first-class honours. When time permits, Rosie shares her extensive experience in leadership and organizational theory as a lecturer at Simon Fraser University and Royal Roads University.

“Leading from the Ground Up”

Using Goldcorp as the case study, Dr. Rosie Steeves and a Goldcorp representative explored what can be accomplished with a comprehensive leadership development program for front-line supervisors. The presenters shared the unique challenges involved with front-line leadership development, as well as initial assessment results. The ultimate goal was to give participants a sense of how a similar program could transform their own organizations.

After sharing the troubling results of recent research on how executive leaders are viewed by their employees, Dr. Steeves highlighted the barriers to developing leadership at the executive level and a guide to overcoming them. She left participants with the challenge to examine their own organizations’ leadership practices.

“Leadership Development: Does It Really Pay Off?”

Despite a 15% drop in the market, Toyota de Puerto Rico has experienced continued growth in sales and employee engagement has risen significantly. Dr. Steeves demonstrated the role of leadership development in TdPR’s success, and how participants can apply these learnings to their own organizations.

Additionally, Dr. Steeves received the CSTD Silver Award for a Refinery training and development program designed for Cameco Corporation.

Is the notion of a high performing executive team a myth? What kind of executive teams best serve today’s organizations? In this roundtable discussion, Dr. Steeves explored the conditions that support executive team dysfunction and what can—and must—be done about it.

 

Book Launch: Made in Canada Leadership, by Amal Henein and Francoise Morissette - October 29, 2007

In researching their book, Made in Canada Leadership, Amal Henein and Francoise Morissette interviewed 295 exceptional leaders and 66 leadership development professionals, including Dr. Steeves. Dr. Steeves responses were so compelling that the authors asked her to speak at the book’s Vancouver launch. Dr. Steeves challenged the audience to take the authors’ central recommendation—that Canada must actively develop a critical mass of leaders—to heart, starting with their own organizations.
